Training

Why choose vocational study and training?

Deciding to focus on vocational qualifications once you leave school can make for a sensible alternative to university. You'll be learning useful skills for the workplace and the training you'll receive will allow you to demonstrate practical qualities valued by employers throughout the country and overseas.

Often related to a specific trade or occupation, vocational training can prepare you for jobs that are based in manual or practical activities and provide the perfect stepping stone between school and work.

Vocational education training (VET) courses provide hands-on learning experiences and the skills and training necessary to fill roles in a range of sectors. They can help you enter the Australian job market in subjects as diverse as business administration, science and technology, art and design, and tourism and hospitality.

VET courses are offered at private colleges as well as technical and further education institutes (TAFE) and all institutions are subject to Government monitoring to ensure high standards.

Qualification types

Vocational courses available to domestic students vary in length from one year to three years. This training includes Certificates I, II, III, IV; Diploma; Advanced Diploma; Vocational Graduate Certificate; and Vocational Graduate Diploma.

Entry into a VET course usually requires either 10, 11 or 12 years of secondary education. Some courses, such as art and design, may require that applicants submit a portfolio of work. Others may require significant work experience. You should check with your chosen institution to find out exact entry requirements.

VET application process

Applications to VET courses are made directly to the institution. After you submit your application, the institution will check that there are places available on your chosen course and if you meet the academic entry requirements and English language proficiency level.

VET applications usually include:

  • Application form
  • Application fee
  • Academic credentials, usually called transcripts
  • Work experience (if applicable)

Funding options

VET FEE-HELP assists eligible students undertaking certain Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses of study (diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate and graduate diploma courses) with an approved VET provider, to pay for all or part of your tuition costs.

VET FEE-HELP is an extension of FEE-HELP, part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), and the scheme covers the cost of your tuition fees through a loan. You do not need to start paying this back until you are employed after your training and earning a certain level of income... More vocational & training info
