Course description

This program has been developed by professionals who have firsthand experience working in disaster situations. Throughout this program students will develop unique and specialised project management skills that can be applied in the event of a disaster. As one of the only universities to offer this specialised project management post graduate program, the University of Newcastle educates students to be immediately valuable to state and federal government, non-governmental organisations involved in disaster relief, and private contracting organisations seeking to be involved in post disaster redevelopment. The Graduate Certificate in Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction exposes students to the filed of disaster management and also create a pathway to the Masters in Disaster Preparedness and Reconstruction. This program applies recognised project management practices to the resolution of a disaster situation providing graduates with the unique ability to work in the situation of a disaster with short-term demands requiring long-term solutions. The professional application of project management skills and techniques as a process for resolving a post disaster situation will develop graduates who are a valuable resource for local government bodies, non-governmental organisations involved in disaster relief, and private contracting organisations seeking to be involved in post disaster redevelopment.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have various requirements for entry into the Graduate Certificate: AQF level 8 Non-Congate entry - Honours Bachelor degree, Honours award, Graduate Diploma AQF Level 7 Cognate entry - Bachelor degree AQF Level 7 Non Cognate entry - Bachelor degree with 3 years’ relevant experience AQF Level 6 Cognate Entry - Associate degree with 5 years relevant experience, Advanced Diploma with 5 years’ relevant experience AQF Level 6 Non-Cognate - associate degree with 10 years’ experience, advanced diploma with 10 years’ relevant experience.
